Packing a lunch is a great idea. It not only saves you money, but it can be a lot healthier than takeout because you can control the ingredients you use. The downside can be that you fall into a sandwich rut. The Williams and McDaniel blog team have put together a list of delicious, sandwich-free lunch ideas that you can easily make in your Williams and McDaniel rental in Guelph and take with you, wherever you’re headed.

Butter Bean and Tuna Salad

This simple and tasty, packable lunch packs a high-protein punch that will help you power through the rest of your day. This Butter Bean and Tuna Salad keeps well for a few days in an airtight container in the fridge. You can make it in advance and check one item off of your morning to do list.

Chicken Rice and Black Bean Salad

This hearty and filling Chicken Rice and Black Bean Salad is a meal all by itself. It can be prepared the night before, with about 20 minutes of hands on time. Toss together cooked rice and chicken with rinsed black beans from a can, then add tomatoes, jalapeno, shallots, olive oil and vinegar and season to taste.

Omelette Wraps

A great sandwich alternative that you can still eat with your hands, these Asian Chicken Omelette Wraps contain chicken with soy sauce, sugar snap peas and red pepper but can easily be modified with any fillings that you like, to suit your personal taste.

Couscous with Raisins, Pine Nuts and Capers

We love this recipe for Couscous with Raisins, Pine Nuts and Capers. It’s simple to prepare but creates richly complex layers of savoury and sweet flavours and it’s super-satisfying. It only takes 20 minutes to make. If you can boil water and sauté some onions in olive oil, you can do this.

If you’re looking to skip plain old pumpkin pie this Thanksgiving, the Williams and McDaniel blog team has some suggestions to make your Thanksgiving feast in Guelph a little sweeter.

Pumpkin Creme Brulee

This Pumpkin Creme Brulee is a Thanksgiving twist on a classic, and it’s definitely one to be thankful for. Don’t be intimidated, this is a simple pumpkin custard spiced with cinnamon, ground clove, nutmeg and ginger (AKA – pumpkin spice). You don’t need a torch to brulee the top — your oven’s broiler will do just fine.

Pumpkin Mousse

This elegant Pumpkin Mousse is sure to wow the crowd this Thanksgiving. Indulge in layers of spiced pumpkin mousse and whipped cream, topped with shaved, dark chocolate and a hint of rum. Once you serve it, your guests may beg for it every year!

Guelph The best fall fruits and vegetables and how to eat them

It’s harvest season in Guelph and that means an abundance of delicious fall fruits and veggies are waiting to be devoured. Today’s post from the blog team at Williams and McDaniel will show you the best way to eat them at Guelph apartments.

Apple Crisp

The apple is a delicious seasonal fruit that is an ideal addition to your fall diet. This apple crisp recipe is a great way to use apples. It’s a great choice because it is naturally sweetened, vegan-friendly and only requires one bowl to throw together. Want to pick your own apples this fall? Check out Martin’s Family Fruit Farm (1420 Lobsinger Line), about a half-hour drive from The Diplomat Apartments (693 Woolwich Street).

Stuffed Eggplants with Herbed Bulgur

Time to make room for the eggplant, one of fall’s most underutilized vegetables. If you’re cooking for a crowd, or want leftovers to last the busy week, Stuffed Eggplants with Herbed Bulgur makes enough for 12. It’s the Herbed Bulgur filling that does the magic here, balancing eggplant with pine nuts, cilantro, parsley and pomegranate seeds.

Olive Oil Zucchini Bread

Fall might as well be called zucchini season! Add zucchini to any meal by making Olive Oil Zucchini Bread — a tasty yet simple appetizer that uses brown sugar and cinnamon to add a touch of sweetness.

Pear-Cardamom Muffins Recipe

Pears often get less attention than apples in the fall, but this delicious fruit is just as fresh and ready for eating. While they’re delicious plain, pears are also great for breakfast pastries like muffins. Pear-Cardamom Muffins can be made in only a half-hour with 15 minutes of prep and 15 minutes in the oven.

Guelph Farmers’ Market

For all of your fall produce needs, the Guelph Farmers Market (4 Gordon Street) is the obvious place to start. Open Saturdays from 7:00 a.m. until noon, this year round market has been serving fresh, locally-grown fruits and veggies for over 180 years. The market is only a 10-minute walk from Park Towers (131 Raymond Street).

Our best tips for studying

Congratulations! You’ve worked hard, you’ve studied hard and you’ve made it into a good school. That’s the good news. The other news is that the hard part is just beginning. You know that you can study hard, this week’s post from the Williams and McDaniel blog team is about studying effectively. Here are few tips for developing a rock solid study plan and making the most of your time in Guelph.

Make a study plan

Avoid the stress and ineffectiveness of last minute cram sessions by creating (and sticking to) an effective study plan. It may seem, at first like you are giving yourself more work, but it will keep you organized and keep your mind at ease. Best of all, if you follow it, you will avoid the sinking feeling of walking into an exam unprepared. It’s all about preparation.

Find an effective place to study

When you study in the same location, day after day, your body and mind become trained. You begin to associate the location with studying, and while you are in that location you are prepared to work. Find a location to study that works for you. One location may work for you but not for someone else. You may need a little background noise, while someone else may need total silence. Wherever your study location is, it should be free from distraction. When you find your spot, stick to it. The University of Guelph Library is a good spot to try, and only a 13 minute bike ride from Park Towers (131 Raymond Street, Guelph)

Form a study group

Studying in a group isn’t a substitute for studying alone. A study group can be an effective supplement to your study schedule. Different individuals may have a better grasp on sections of the material you are studying. By pooling resources and playing on your strengths, each individual member of the group makes the group stronger as a whole.

Take a break

This doesn’t mean giving yourself permission to stop studying and go the movies. Taking regular and scheduled study breaks can be an effective, even essential tool for studying. Structuring study breaks into your study schedule will help ensure optimum focus and processing of information.
You’ve worked very hard and you’ve been accepted to a great school, don’t accept less from yourself now. The blog team at Williams and McDaniel hopes these study tips help you through the next few years. Another summer is on its way out. The season may seem short-lived, but you still have the Labour Day long weekend left to make the most of it. Living in Guelph means that most of the activities people travel to for summer fun are already within easy reach. Here are some suggestions for a Labour Day staycation in Guelph.

A natural cycle

As the end of summer gives way to the beginning of fall, bike along a nature trail to take in the beauty of the changing of the seasons. The Speed River/Royal Recreation Trail is only a few minutes from Sienna Apartments (8 Speedvale Avenue West, Guelph). You can follow the trail all the way to the Guelph Lake Conservation Area, where a whole world of summer fun awaits you.

Swimming

Nothing says summer like a day at the beach. There are two sandy swimming beaches at Guelph Lake: the Main Beach and Island Beach. You can ride a bike to the beach from Inverness Apartments (29 Inverness Drive) in about 15 minutes. The water quality is tested weekly all summer long.

Picnic

It’s the simple pleasures that can make summer so enjoyable. Simply pack a few sandwiches, and some cold drinks, and head off to a nearby park for a picnic. Silvercreek Park is across the street from Pioneer Apartments, Park Towers and Terrace Towers.

Float your boat

You still have time to get out on the water this summer. Guelph Lake (a 7 minute drive from Maplewood Apartments) is a great spot for sailing, canoeing or kayaking. It’s peaceful because it’s a no-motor lake. Don’t have a boat? Don’t worry. Kayaks can be rented until Labour Day!
You can’t make summer last forever, but you can pack as much fun as possible into the Labour Day long weekend. For more information on Williams and McDaniel rental properties in Guelph, please click here.

A camping trip is the perfect way to make summer feel like summer. Take some time to sit back and enjoy the scenery, the campfires, and the coziness of your tent. When you live in Guelph, you’re never too far away from some of the best (and most convenient) camping in the province. The Williams and McDaniel blog team has made it even easier for you to set up camp, with this list of campgrounds near your Williams and McDaniel rental property in Guelph.

Guelph Lake Conservation Area

Guelph Lake Park (7743 Conservation Road, Guelph) has 108 serviced campsites, complete with electricity and water. There are also 192 unserviced sites — if you like to rough it. Depending on your preference, choose from riverfront or forest. You’ll also have access to the park’s two beaches, which are great spots for fishing, kayaking, canoeing and sailing. Who knew all this was less than a 10 minute drive from Inverness Apartments (29 Inverness Drive, Guelph)! To reserve your campsite, click here.

Rockwood Conservation Area

The giant limestone cliff that towers over the lake makes the picturesque Rockwood Conservation Area a popular site for photographers and film crews. Hike the trails, rent a canoe, swim, or just quietly admire the scenery. Camp season is in full swing right now, until October 16th. The park is also open for day use and is only a 15 minute drive from Park Towers (131 Raymond Street).

Toronto West KOA

The Toronto West KOA Campground (9301 Second Line RR #1 Nassagaweya Campbellville) is less than a half hour drive from Kortright Apartments (79 -83 Conroy Crescent, Guelph). If you prefer the idea of “glamping” (glamour camping) they offer fully equipped deluxe camp cabins — complete with A/C, full kitchen and bathroom, linens and more. There are also more rustic cabins and a variety of RV and tent sites.

West Montrose Family Camp

West Montrose Family Camp is a quaint and quiet, full service family campground. Enjoy the hiking trails, the pool, water and electric hook-ups, hot showers and flush toilets. There’s plenty of on site recreation, and you’re only minutes away from a farmers market, Walmart, Elora Grand River Casino and more. It’s less than a twenty minute drive from Willow Terrace (169 Willow Road, Guelph).
Don’t let summer pass you by without rolling out a sleeping bag, waking up in a tent and cooking breakfast over the fire. For more information on Williams and McDaniel Rental Properties in Guelph, please visit our website.

But most everyone can learn to run, especially if they have the right equipment and know-how to get started. Discover the joys of running, beginning with today’s post for Guelph apartment residents from our preferred property management company, Williams and McDaniel.

Start with the shoes

The first step in learning to run is to start at your feet. A good pair of running shoes is a necessity, important not just for comfort, but also for preventing injury. Ask a staff member at a local running store to help you pick out the perfect pair of running shoes. Running Works (89 Gordon Street) is just a ten-minute walk from The Sovereign Apartments (66 Macdonell Street). You can also try the Running Room (Market Square East, 160 Kortright Road), less than a ten-minute drive from Kortright Apartments (79-83 Conroy Crescent).

Explore new trails

Now that you have new shoes, it’s time to give them a try. Explore the trails near your Guelph apartment this summer. Residents at Terrace Towers (125 Raymond Street) are only steps away from Silvercreek Trail. This scenic local path follows the river, winding its way to Royal City Park. The trail is about five kilometres in length.

Find a support system

Learning and maintaining a new type of workout by yourself is always difficult, no matter which activity you choose. Find a friend or join a running club to give yourself the extra support you need to turn running into a regular habit that you enjoy. You can find multiple running clubs, training programs and even virtual programs at the Running Room. You can also join an independent running group, such as The Guelph Victors.

Start small

Remember that learning takes time. Set small manageable goals as you get started. Download a running app to manage and record your runs. With a little dedication and hard work, you will be amazed at your progress.
There is no better time to start running than today. The blog team at Williams and McDaniel hopes that today’s post helps jumpstart you towards your new running goals. For additional information about their Guelph apartments, simply visit their website.

If you’re considering attending Incline Decline, you’ll be happy to know that one of the festival’s main venues, The Making-Box Theatre (40 Baker Street), is just 2.5 kilometres from one of Williams and McDaniels’ secure, high-rise apartment buildings — Regency Court Apartments (316 Kathleen Street). That’s only a five-minute drive or 25-minute walk. Some of the acts at this venue include experimental lo-fi dance group, New Chance, 80s punk band, Teenager, and surfy-psychedelic group, Battlewülf — along with about about a dozen more acts over the four-day span.

Just down the street is another primary venue, Jimmy Jazz (52 Macdonell Street), which is just over one kilometre from the riverfront Park Towers (131 Raymond Street). This venue will be hosting Brooklyn-based JOBS, as well as Toronto’s rock/soul/eletcro blend, Germaphobes, and London’s dreamy indie-rock group, SM.

The festival, which runs July 15-18, is a grassroots initiative supported by volunteers, donations and ticket sales. If you’re interested in buying a ticket, making a monetary contribution or putting in some hours yourself, you can visit their Facebook page.
Whether you live in the nearby Regency Court Apartments or Park Towers, our preferred property management company, Williams and McDaniel, hopes you soak up all the festival fun the summer has to offer.
