Start planning your summer garden

Take an opportunity to learn about when to start seeds, how to transfer seedlings outdoors and where you can pick up gardening supplies for your Guelph apartment. Our preferred property management company, Williams and McDaniel, has put together some suggestions for residents who want to get a start on their prize-winning gardens.

Start Seeds Inside

To determine how early you need to start seeds, check the ideal transplanting date for each plant on their packaging and then count backwards. If you start your seedlings too early, you will be left with plants that are ready to go outside before the garden is ready for them. Start off by planting two seeds per pot or scattering the top of the mix in a seed tray, tamping them in place and moistening the soil on top. Keep things organized by using permanent ink to label the containers with plant names and dates and speed up the germination process with plastic wrap or a plastic cover. Grab the seeds and the gardening supplies at Brock Road Nursery Garden Centre and Gift Shoppe located at 1858 Gordon Street. The store is a 15-minute drive from the Regency Court Apartments – Speedvale and the Park Towers Apartments.
Caring for Seedlings

Once the seedlings start emerging, remove the plastic covering and move the plant into a brightly lit area. If there is no bright area, a grow-light setup will give your plants the 12 to 16 hours of light they need to thrive. For best results, keep the light three inches above plants and adjust as the seedlings grow. Stay on the lookout for leaves, as these will indicate when to begin feeding the seedlings a weekly solution of diluted liquid organic fertilizer or fertilizer specifically designed for seed starting. Add some colour to the Executive Suites lawn by getting a head start on your garden prep.
Transferring to Larger Pots
While you might think your seedlings look crowded, it is a good idea to be patient and wait it out. It is important to wait until the second set of leaves form, an indicator that it’s time to transfer them into a larger pot. Four-inch pots are the standards for seedlings that have outgrown their trays. Fill new containers with moistened potting mix just below the rim and create a hole in the soil for the plant. Once in the new container, firm moistened soil around them and place in bright light

Hardening Off

Approximately 10 days to two weeks before you plan to plant your seedlings outdoors start preparing them for outdoor conditions, also known as “hardening off.” When you’re ready to start this process, cut back on water, stop weekly fertilizing and set the plants outside for a few hours each day. Gradually, you’ll start to increase their time outside, but remember to bring them inside at night and if temperatures drop. After the plants have spent several nights outdoors, they’re finally ready to be transplanted into a garden or permanent container. Enhance the garden or balcony suites at the Regency Court Apartments – Kathleen by taking these planning tips into consideration.
Give your garden a head start this season by preparing your plants weeks in advance. In no time at all, you’ll be enjoying the gorgeous bloom of your plants and the delightful spring weather.

Start Volunteering in Guelph

volunteer group hands together in guelph, Guelph Apartments, Apartments Guelph, Apartments for Rent in Guelph, Guelph apartment rentals, Apartments in Guelph, Apartment rentals in Guelph, Guelph Apartments for RentGive back and do some good for the community by signing up for volunteer opportunities. Volunteering has a variety of benefits outside of its impact on the community and organization. Families and individuals can improve their lives by giving back, meeting new people and boosting their social skills. Remember even the littlest tasks and a few hours every week can make a real difference to organizations, people and even animals in need. Our preferred property management company, Williams and McDaniel, has outlined some benefits of volunteering that will motivate Guelph apartment residents to get out and give back to their community.

Impact On Organization

Many organizations are currently understaffed and unable to pay individuals for their work as most, if not all, profits are going towards the organizations and the people they help. The Evergreen Seniors Community Centre welcomes all individuals who are interested in becoming volunteers to regular information sessions. Located at 683 Woolwich Street, the community centre is a one-minute drive and four-minute walk from the Sienna Apartments, a two-minute drive and a nine-minute walk from the Regency Court – Kathleen, a six-minute drive, nine-minute transit commute and 32-minute walk from the Sovereign Apartments and a seven-minute drive and 18-minute transit commute from the Terrace Towers Apartments and Park Towers Apartments. Contact Becky MacDonald at 519-823-1291 ext. 2096 for information about volunteering.

Connect With Others

Participating in your community’s volunteer initiatives will give you the opportunity to interact with the community and its people on a more personal level. If you’re looking for a way to get out of your Kortright Apartment or Belle Ayre Apartment, meet new people and make new friends, volunteering is a great way to reach out to others. It doesn’t matter if you’re a local or a new to the area, volunteering is a fulfilling activity that everyone can get involved in. Overcome shyness or fear of meeting new people and enhance your self-esteem by practicing and developing your social skills in a space without judgement or pressure.

Good For Minds and Bodies

Doing good for others can provide a natural sense of accomplishment and increase self-confidence. Volunteering requires you to communicate and interact with your community and has been shown to help combat depression. Initiatives with pets and animals have been proven to reduce stress and anxiety and improve overall mood. Since 1893, the Guelph Humane Society has been rescuing and sheltering animals in the Guelph and Wellington Communities. The organization is always looking for regular volunteers who can make a weekly commitment. Special events volunteers to help with fundraisers and newsletter deliveries are also needed. Learn more about volunteer opportunities that include dog walking and fostering animals on their website. Located at 500 Wellington Street West, the Humane Society is a nine-minute drive from the Driftwood Apartments and The Diplomat Apartments, an 11-drive from the Pioneer Apartments and a 12-minute drive from the Inverness Apartments.

Grow something green in Guelph

apartments for rent in Guelph, apartment living, gardening, Guelph Apartments, Apartments Guelph, Apartments for Rent in Guelph, Guelph apartment rentals, Apartments in Guelph, Apartment rentals in Guelph, Guelph Apartments for RentInfuse some nature into your Guelph apartment by growing an assortment of plants in the space. Whether you are an expert or a beginner when it comes to gardening, there are houseplants available that are low-maintenance and can survive in any conditions. This means you won’t have to worry about having plenty of light or if you happen to forget a watering here and there. To give residents an idea of what will thrive in their apartment space, our preferred property management company, Williams and McDaniel, has put together a list of low-maintenance plants to grow.

Pothos (or Devil’s Ivy)

This fast-growing, full-figured plant will make a great addition to your apartment. Not only is the plant aesthetically pleasing with its glossy, heart-shaped leaves and white markings, it is also relatively low-maintenance. It requires occasional pruning to keep it lush and full and should be placed somewhere with low to bright light, but not in direct sunlight. For all your plant-related needs and supplies drop by Robinson’s Flowers Limited located at 93 Wyndham Street North. The Driftwood Apartments, Park Towers Apartments and Pioneer Apartments are a four-minute drive from the store and the Inverness Apartments are a seven-minute drive from the store.

Cast Iron Plant

If you are looking for a plant that does not require too much of a commitment, the Cast Iron Plant with its long, dark green glossy leaves has the ability to live under the worst light conditions. This plant can withstand low light and humid conditions and can get by with infrequent watering. However, make sure to wipe down or shower its leaves with water, as they are known to attract dust and dirt.

Aloe Vera

A great plant option for first-time gardeners is Aloe Vera. This plant should be placed in a warm, sunny window and watered on occasion, but it does not require round-the-clock attention. In addition to its charming appearance, Aloe is a natural remedy for burns and cuts. All you need to do is crack open a leaf and apply the natural juices to the affected area for soothing and cooling relief. Visit Patti’s Flower Boutique located at 259 Grange Road, Unit #5B to pick up your Aloe plant and everything else you need for your gardening supplies. The Maplewood Apartments, Juniper Apartments and Cherryblossom Apartments are a five-minute drive and the Executive Suites are a two-minute drive and four-minute walk away.

Peace Lily

Peace Lilies will enhance and purify the air in your apartment space with their beautiful creamy white flowers and glossy green leaves. Best of all, they tolerate low light, so you don’t have to worry about sunlight levels. However, it is important to keep their soil moist and avoid repotting them as long as possible.

Ferns

For an extremely fuss-free plant that prefers low light and favours humid conditions, try ferns. To keep your plants healthy and happy it is best to establish a consistent watering schedule and to pick a permanent location in your apartment for them.  Similar to the Peace Lily, it is best to keep a fern’s soil moist but not wet. If you are watering too much, the leaves will start to yellow and you should hold off on watering for at least a few days. Located at 38 Wilson Street, Sweet Violets has an assortment of plant options to outfit your apartment. The Regency Court Kathleen Apartments, Belle Ayre Apartments, Kortright Apartments, Regency Court Speedvale Apartments and Sienna Apartments are a 10-minute drive from the store.

Snake Plant and English Ivy

If you’re looking to improve the existing air quality of your apartment with plants that can survive in most apartments, Snake Plant and English Ivy are your best options. Both of these plants requires minimal light and are known to absorb carbon monoxide and formaldehyde, which can be found in carpet dyes, and release oxygen back into the air.

Infuse your apartment space with plant options that require minimal TLC, but still give you all the healthy benefits of owning a plant. For those who are looking to rent, Williams and McDaniel’s Guelph apartments offer an escape from the big city and easy access to all amenities.

Not only are they eco-friendly because they don’t waste paper, but they can also double as a décor item in your apartment. Get organized and on the ball by creatively putting these boards to good use in your Guelph Apartment. To help residents get the most out of them, our preferred property management company, Williams and McDaniel, has put together some practical uses for your boards.

Brainstorming

Using your whiteboard to brainstorm will open up a space where you can let your ideas flow freely and you can visually connect with them. Boards can be used for both business and personal projects including realistic DIY home improvement projects that you want to tackle in the coming weeks or upcoming weekend, ways to modify that recipe to make it just right or which activities would be best suited to keep your little ones happy and healthy. Get crafty with your whiteboard and create this ‘Say Yes’ DIY Framed Whiteboard. Visit Wyndham Art Supplies located at 12 Wyndham Street North to pick up all the supplies you’ll need for the DIY. The Sienna Apartments, Belle Ayre Apartments, Regency Court Kathleen Apartments and Regency Court Speedvale Apartments are less than five minutes away from that store, while the Kortright Apartments are less than 10 minutes away.

To-Do Lists

Having your to-do list right in front of you, in your apartment’s kitchen or common areas, can act as a constant reminder of things you need to accomplish. Keep a record of projects you want to start and a goal for when they should be completed. With a clearly set goal in mind you’ll be more likely to follow through and stick with the project rather than abandoning it. Use the blackboard or whiteboard as a space to outline grocery lists, mark down potential sales that you want to take advantage of and spring cleaning tasks that need to get done. This ‘In Progress’ Chalkboard Cleaning List breaks down tasks on a daily, weekly and monthly basis. You can apply this same method to tasks other than cleaning and watch as they are quickly checked off.

Family Menu and Meal Scheduling

While you can use your chalkboard or whiteboard to plan out weekly events, you can also use it to figure out what meals are in store for the week or for the day. If more family members are out a certain night of the week, save that day for a relaxed meal and leave the large pot roast or lasagna for a night where everyone will be attending. The ‘Kitchn’ blog offers up 5 Chalkboard Ideas for Meal Planning that will outfit your apartment in organized style. Once you’ve decided on the week’s meals, pick up the necessary ingredients at Metro located at 500 Edinburgh Road South. The Driftwood Apartments, The Diplomat Apartments and Inverness Apartments are less than a 15-minute drive from the store and the Pioneer Apartments and Terrace Towers Apartments are less than six minutes away.

Chore Charts

Give your kids their chores in a fun way by writing them on your blackboard or whiteboard. Outlining the chores they have to do and giving them an opportunity to be rewarded, either with a gold star or candy, will have them excited to do their chores. Once they’ve completed a task let them cross it off the list. The ‘Lisa Dagley’ blog offers up a creative chalkboard entry way idea, while the ‘Our Fifth House’ blog opts for a larger, full-sized DIY chalkboard creation. Both options are ideal for infusing blackboard creativity into your Guelph Apartment. Michaels located at 28 Pinebush Road is a 26-minute drive from the Cherryblossom Apartments, Juniper Apartments and Maplewood Apartments and the Executive Suites, The Sovereign and Park Towers Apartments are a 20-minute drive from the store.
